The 2010 International Atherosclerosis
Society-sponsored Workshop on High Density Lipoproteins will provide attendees with state-of-the-art information regarding major and emerging areas of basic and clinical research on the biology and therapeutics of high density lipoproteins.  Attendees will share information and discuss topics including: genome-wide association studies to identify novel gene determinants of plasma HDL cholesterol; apolipoprotein A-I structure; ABCA1 expression and mechanism of action; reverse cholesterol transport; the HDL proteome; HDL and inflammation; HDL and the innate immune system; HDL's role in insulin secretion and alterations in diabetes; ABCG1; LCAT; SR-BI; mechanisms of niacin action in modifying lipids and reducing inflammation; CETP inhibitors; agonists of ABCA1 expression; LXR agonists; apoA-I mimetics; and the regulatory hurdles involved in the introduction of novel agents affecting HDL.  Debates regarding the relationship of low HDL-C and atherosclerosis, and the importance of HDL as compared to LDL as a therapeutic target to reduce atherosclerosis will highlight the controversies remaining related to the importance of HDL.  Attendees will stay in, dine, and attend sessions together in one hotel in order to maximize opportunities for interactions, exchange of information, and learning at the meeting.
